Today I have a special post to share with you!
It has been a while since I did a Spotlight Series post! I met Netty Parker a while back -maybe two years back? at an event with Level21. We chatted a little and exchanged socials. I've been lowkey following him and his music career ever since -and it is a joy to see where it has taken him! I was finally curious enough I wanted to know more about his journey as an artist and musician and I am lucky enough to be able to share it with you all today!
Born in the Bronx, NY, Netty was always drawn to music. As a child he would watch music videos and listen to music constantly. "I have always been into music but starting out, I did not really have the tools available to make music," he said. He was inspired early on by the movie 'Hustle and Flow.'' "I remember watching that movie, being inspired, and realizing you can just make music right from your own home," he told me.
At the age of 10, he moved to Lincolnton, NC with his dad where he really begin focusing on music. "There were not as many distractions," he explained, "and we began to invest in equipment. Piece by piece." They ended up building a whole studio in their home. One of the most interesting things that Netty shared with me in this interview, was that his biggest obstacle when it came to making music was that he did not have any real knowledge or experience in how to go about making the music.
To hear that answer, it felt so honest to me and so relatable! I cannot tell you how many dreams and goals I have but I have no idea how to even begin to go about it!
For Netty, the internet was his resource. Everything he learned about making music he searched online. In fact, it played such a role in his upcoming as a musician, that he even named his company Internet Records.
One thing that always interests me is learning about other people's creative processes. So, of course I had to ask! For Netty, his creative process stems from life experiences and channeling the feelings from those experiences into music. "I go through it, hold on to it, and then shed it away slowly, through music," he summed up. I have to imagine for musicians this is probably a common process, but the way Netty worded his responses to my questions were so well thought out and interesting.
In my opinion, one of the things that sets him apart from many other artists is in his goal; his main goal is to "make your products with products." For example, Netty shoots all of his videos on iPhones and puts them out. "Art and creativity is right in front of you," he said, "it is even in your hands."
In fact, that is his advice to other artists out there; "just do it -like Nike!" he laughed, "it doesn't matter if you have all the pieces, just start where you are at and keep moving forward."
Again, this sentiment is one that really resonates with me! Nothing will ever be perfect starting out, but you have to start somewhere.
So, what is next for Netty Parker?
"It is a little hard to share what I am working on because it can change easily," he told me. But don't worry! Because he is always working on something! In fact, he just dropped an album called 'Might Need Help 2' which came out on August 28th. You can listen to it on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, and Deezer.
I see a bright future in store for Netty! And I am going to keep watching to see where he goes next!
Huge thank you to Netty Parker for taking the time to chat with me! And you can follow him on IG:
